Spooks Shack

By Wendy Orr

Reviewed by:  Andrew Bolton  Room 11

Recommended for Girls and Boys Age 7 and up

SETTING:

The setting is in a forest where there used to be a gold mine.  A big white house at the very edge of the forest, and Boris Bank’s Mansion

CHARACTERS:

The main characters are Finn who is a nice, orange haired boy.  Jack Henry who is a ghost and his dog Nipper.  There is also Boris Banks, Aunt Agatha and all the forest animals.

PLOT:

Deep in the bush, where trees grow tall Finn discovers an old deserted shack.  Inside is shivery cold, with green fungus on the walls.  When a dog growls and a gravelly voice snarls, Finn’s hair stands up like bristles on a brush.  An old man and his dog are glowing in the darkness.  Jack Henry lived in the shack for 100 years and was friends with all the wild creatures.  When Finn is with the old ghost, he can feel what the birds are singing and what the animals are feeling.  BUT now they are all in danger – someone is going to bulldoze the land and wreck their homes.

How can one boy, a ghost and his dog save the bush?

SUMMARY:

I would recommend this book to people who like ghosts, fires and gold.

I think this book is cool because someone wants to burn down the forest and turn it into a gold mine.  I would give this book 9 out of 10 stars.
